Questions

What does comprehensive midwifery care with Roam Midwifery include?

comprehensive Midwifery care with Roam Midwifery includes care from two midwives— always. From the start of pregnancy through birth and postpartum, monitoring for mother and child is of utmost priority. This is achieved with timely face to face prenatal and postpartum visits, phlebotomy services and laboratory testing, referrals for ultrasounds as well as fetal monitoring via fetal doppler, palpation for fetal position, weight and amniotic fluid, fetal measurements, and nutritional support.

During early labor, we are on call to guide you through the laboring process. as labor progresses, we attend to you and stay during active labor—approximately 6 centimeters or more. through labor and delivery, we are continuously monitoring maternal and child wellbeing to help ensure continued low risk status. the immediate postpartum period focuses on family bonding and continued optimal transition to life outside the womb. we stay with you and your family for approximately four hours after birth when mother and child are stable.

if i am choosing a planned hospital birth, can i still have midwifery care?

absolutely! we can provide comprehensive prenatal care as we work collaboratively with you and alongside your obstetrician through to postpartum.

what if there is an emergency in labor?

emergencies are rare! as midwives, we are skilled birth providers and are trained to manage postpartum hemorrhages, shoulder dystocias, and are trained in neonatal and adult resuscitation should it become necessary. we routinely carry medications like anti-hemorrhagics, intravenous fluids, and oxygen. we collaborate and consult with physicians as needed and can transfer to a local hospital as necessary. we always will have clear conversations, provide informed consents & procedures, and engage you and your family in shared decision making.

what happens if I need to transfer to a hospital during labor?

the midwifery model of care focuses on holistic, physiologic, and low risk care. should your pregnancy, labor or postpartum phases become anything other than low risk, we help to facilitate safe transfer of care. we will remain at your side as your labor support, if possible given current hospital policy. transfers are typically either non-emergent or emergent. for non-emergent transfers, the birthing family can typically drive to their hospital of choice. during emergent situations, we, as midwives, will retain emergency services to transport the birthing family to the nearest hospital. if either situation should arise, we, as midwives, will call ahead, inform the hospital staff of impending arrival and provide records for their reference. after birth, postpartum care may continue with us!
